Tesco would never allow it

THERE was a mini riot building up when I was dropped off at Macclesfield station this morning. The station had been converted into a fairground with all the adjacent car parks occupied by accompanying trucks. Train passengers arrived to find nowhere to leave their cars.

The nearest available parking was Jordangate, a ten-minute walk even without luggage. It was a complete shambles.

Of course kids love fairgrounds but would it have made a material difference had the fair been relocated to South Park? It works for other events.

"Aha," said a station manager. "It’s the Charter of 1261 which allows use of the land for a travelling fair." (It probably allows pigs inside public houses as well.)

The borough council needs to show some pragmatism; it’s no good sticking their fingers in their ears and whistling Dixie.

Does anyone really believe that had this been Tesco’s land they’d have closed down their car park for a week?

Of course not. They’d have found an alternative site and paid for free advertising.

Tesco wouldn’t tolerate chaos and neither should we. Get a grip, councillors, show some initiative, elections are coming.

Every little helps.

It's a ridiculous location for a fair anyway. The carpark is tiny and there are hardly any rides. A total waste of time and massive inconvenience all round.
