Silk Road memorial

HAVING been pulled over by Cheshire Police for driving ‘too slowly’ down the Silk Road, I’m well aware of the 70mph speed limit. It’s the fastest road for miles around with motorists rocketing in both directions. It’s a freeway and stopping for anything other than an emergency is obviously forbidden.

So I was rather stunned to find a car parked up on the northbound carriageway last night. On closer examination it appeared the occupants had abandoned their car to place flowers at the site of a fatal accident.

I understand the desire to honour a roadside memorial for a loved one but by parking their car on the side of a fast flowing freeway they were inviting another fatal collision. Most accidents happen at danger spots, not designed for parked vehicles or pedestrians.

Maybe it’s time we found alternative sites for these unofficial memorials before they become self-perpetuating?
