Yeo beauty!

10/ 9/2008

VETERAN striker Simon Yeo revealed his delight at opening Macc Town’s account.

Yeo’s first league start of the season, in a youthful Silkmen side at home to Luton Town, saw him notch a fine opening goal and help nurture the youngsters to take the three points.

The former soldier, postman and carpet fitter received praise from Macc boss Keith Alexander, a colleague during their spells at Lincoln City, Peterborough United and Bury.

"Simon Yeo is a fit lad," said Alexander of the 34-year-old.

"I brought him to the club because he’s a goalscorer, although he’s getting on a bit. I thought he would have an impact coming off the bench but we’ve not been scoring so he had to play.

"He tired towards the end, as he will do, but he had a big influence on the players around him."

Yeo was unlucky to have his second strike chalked off by the linesman but Paul Morgan’s goal on the hour mark proved to be enough for the three points, despite the Hatters’ injury-time strike.

"I was delighted to get the first goal," he said. "We’d been in a bit of a sticky patch so the gaffer made a few changes.

"We were pleased to get the win, but a bit relieved too. The lads knew we hadn’t been playing the best but we were more confident going into the game after our second half performance at Crewe.

"Of course I was disappointed to have my second goal disallowed but that’s football."

Playing alongside a host of teenagers who came through the ranks at the Moss Rose, Yeo’s experience was invaluable in an important win for the club.

"The young lads did really well when they came in," he added.

"I’m one of the older ones but I’m still one of the lads in training, and so are the other senior lads here.

"You need a few experienced players. I just tried to be encouraging towards them on the day, we spoke a lot about the game and worked hard for each other.

"Hopefully we can kick on from here. The team spirit has always been there and when we went in after the first half, we knew we could win.

"We took that confidence and spirit into the second half, and we didn’t think we were going to concede.

"It was a shame to let one in right at the end but the lads did really well.

We’ve been training well this week, we’re bubbling and there’s a confidence about the place. We’re just looking forward to the next game now."
