Merger for two top local clubs

TWO of the region’s most successful junior football clubs are merging for next season.

The merger of Wilmslow Sports JFC and Communities United FC was celebrated at last week’s awards night at Wilmslow Rugby Club.

The event brought together players, parents and supporters from both clubs and honoured each player’s achievements.

Wilmslow Sports celebrated its 40th season in 2007/2008 with 17 squads competing in the Timperley, Mid Cheshire and Stockport Metro Leagues.

It’s a far cry from the club’s origins, having been formed by a group of fathers unable to find a local club for their sons.

Communities United (pictured) was established in 2004 as a local football initiative aimed at improving grass roots football coaching and playing opportunities.

The club acquired sponsorship from local professional coaching company PFC as well as additional support from local parents and businesses.

The club currently offers regular football training and matches to more than 100 children and 20 adults from the region.

In the last four years, both clubs have achieved many successes, with 17 trophies between them.

The merged club is holding trials for players going into school years three and four in September.

The sessions are at 5pm on Wednesday 9 and 16 July at Wilmslow High School, Holly Road.
