Month of misery for Prestwich
2/10/2008
FOOTBALL: Prestwich Heys capped off a month of misery with a 3-1 home defeat to Springhead in the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League Premier Division.
Heys made a good start to the season in August. But a sorry September has left them languishing in 12th spot in the table.
They have conceded a whopping 27 goals in their 12 competitive games this season with the continued changing of personnel at the back due to suspensions, injuries and unavailability being the major contributing factor.
They struggled defensively again on Saturday. They also missed a host of goal scoring chances after a Brandon Jolly strike had given them an early lead.
Standians also suffered a disappointing defeat at the weekend. They were nearly at full strength at Heywood St James but they passed the ball and defended poorly and the resulting 3-2 defeat saw them slip down to 11th place in the first division table.
It was undoubtedly Standians’ worst display of the season. They have more than enough quality to beat sides like Heywood but all that they had to show for their efforts on Saturday were consolation goals via young midfielder Jamie Hulme and Paul Tierney.
Standians had plenty of other chances and the referee certainly did not do them any favours, giving Heywood a first half penalty when the infringement clearly took place outside the box before allowing Heywood’s winner to stand when it should have been disallowed for off-side.
