Wilmslow Tamed

HOCKEY: With a new coach installed and a thorough pre-season behind them, expectations were high ahead of Wilmslow’s first league game at Tameside.

The start could not have been better as, 20 seconds in, Willem Keune finished in the bottom corner following sharp interplay with his strike partner Simeon Mellor.

Tameside weren’t riled however, and the rest of the first half was played out in Wilmslow’s half with Tameside scoring two well-worked goals to go into a 2-1 half-time lead.

The Oakwood Farm outfit came out in the second half looking for the equaliser and good work from Emile Broome and Jamie Thorpe resulted in a number of short corners which unfortunately were not converted.

On the counter-attack, Tameside proved too strong and took a 4-1 lead into the last quarter of the game.

With the game all but lost, goals from Matthew Westbrook and Mellor gave Wilmslow hope, but the final score was 5-3 to Tameside.

Wilmslow’s other men’s teams fared much better, with three convincing victories.

The seconds defeated Sale 4-1 with a hat-trick from Clive Westbrook.

A solid defensive performance gave the third team a 2-0 win, while a mixture of experience and youth - and a Matthew Bonner hat-trick - gave the fourths a 6-2 win at Macclesfield.
